
Parallel Shaft, Worm, Helical-Bevel or Planetary? Match Gearbox Design to Your Working Conditions
Choosing the right gearbox for your conveyor isn’t about picking the “best” one — it’s about selecting the most suitable unit for your operating conditions.
After optimizing drive systems across mining, aggregate, and manufacturing plants, here’s my practical breakdown:
- Parallel Shaft Helical – My default for long-running, energy-conscious applications. Excellent efficiency (94–97%) and low noise, but they need space.
- Worm Gearboxes – Ideal for compact, right-angle, intermittent duty. High ratios in a small package, but efficiency drops fast (50–85%). Great when cost and space matter more than energy.
- Helical-Bevel – The workhorse for heavy shock loads and continuous operation. Outstanding torque density and reliability where downtime is expensive.
- Planetary – Best when space and weight are critical. Incredible power density and precision, though repair complexity is higher.
The real skill is matching the gearbox to your actual duty cycle and priorities.
